The emotionally wrenching Fruitvale Station doesn’t feel like a call-to-arms so much as a call against them. An itchy trigger finger killed the 22-year-old black father Oscar Grant in the early hours of New Year’s Day, 2009, when an altercation with transit cops at the titular Oakland railway station led to one officer, Johannes Mehserle, reaching for his gun, not his taser.

Oscar was the victim of terrible misfortune, and of simply possessing the wrong skin colour, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. His death led to widespread rioting. But Ryan Coogler, feted in America last year for his impressive debut, hasn’t given us a campaigning or polemical account of it. Looking at the last 24 hours, he’s zeroed in on the meaning of Oscar’s life, and the moments when it was taken away, and the people who knew him best. (extract)

Hier haben wir eine Inszenierung von fast lässiger Undramatik. Den Verlockungen der Sentimentalität wurde widerstanden. Dem nichtsahnenden Leben wurde kein vorausdeutender Todesschatten aufgezwungen, und der Hauptdarsteller Michael B. Jordan spielt das Normale nach mit einer wunderbar schlaksigen Vitalität. Das gibt dieser Tragödie der Sinnlosigkeit ihre realistische Kraft.

Das grandiose Regiedebüt von Ryan Coogler breitet den letzten Tag im Leben von Oscar Grant aus - und zeigt so, wie es dazu kommt, dass eine Gesellschaft, die sich eigentlich auf dem Weg zur Gleichberechtigung von Schwarzen glaubt, dennoch seinen Tod erlaubt: von einem Bahnpolizisten in den Rücken geschossen. Dass Coogler dabei immer um Objektivität ringt - das macht einen eher noch wütender.
